Darrah’s Towing began in 1981. Fred Darrah was frustrated when the vehicle he was driving broke down and he couldn’t get a tow truck on a Sunday to tow his vehicle home.
Fred started Darrah’s with the determination that the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area desperately needed a true 24 hour towing service – with SERVICE being the key. Anyone can own a tow truck but Fred wanted Darrah’s to be a company that provides service when customers really need help – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Fred’s daughter Carmela started working at Darrah’s as the overnight dispatcher in 1984. If you ask Carm about some of her earliest Darrah’s memories, the first thing she will tell you is she remembers her Dad sleeping on the concrete floor of the shop all night long in a sleeping bag. When Carm received a call for service, she would go into the shop and shake her Dad’s shoulder and tell him, “Dad, we got a call!” Carm would start the coffee and Fred would get up and take care of their customers.
In 2002, Fred officially retired and Carm took over ownership of Darrah’s. The crew at Darrah’s still tease Fred that retired doesn’t mean you only work 6 days a week instead of 7!
On any given day, you will find Carm or Fred (and their spouses, and Carm’s children) actually working at Darrah’s. Carm is of the mindset that she would never ask an employee to do something that she herself wouldn’t do.
Darrah’s is proudly a second generation owned family business with the 3rd generation growing up right alongside Fred and Carm learning the trade.
